[Negashi OJ] The ulema council of Addis Ababa held an extra-ordinary meeting with Imams, School Directors and Community leaders on Wednesday and delibrated on the draft regulation the Ministry of Education prepared with the intention of implementing it in all educational institutes, public and private, across the country. The Council welcome the Ministry’s effort to set up a standard code but critisized its content for its biased stand towards Muslims, its unconstitutionality, self contradition, and for its being a one that can only polarise our peaceful co-existence and would not contribute towards meeting the objectives of government educational policy. The Council challenged the Ministry about its claimed authority to put ban on religious freedom the constitution granted to Ethiopians. Read further

Badr representatives across North America will be gathering in Washington DC between February 8 and10, 2008 to discuss various issues related to the organization and assess the current affairs of Ethiopian Muslims. We would like to remind all participants to confirm their participation as earliest as possible.

The Diaspora Ethiopian Muslim Community has been deliberating on the draft rule and regulation the Ethiopian Ministry of Education prepared and aspired to implement. BADR International Ethiopian Muslims Federation wrote earlier to the Prime Minister and expressed its concern on the document that seriously affects the right of citizens to freely exercise their religious and keep their cultural and historical values.

The Diaspora community joined hands with the local Muslim Community and students of Ethiopian educational institutions in their opposition to the intended regulation whose primary targets are Muslims and their values. To make this of their position clear, they issued a statement which you may access by clicking here for the original scanned document(3,98 MB) or here for the text of the statement(66 kB), both are in PDF format.

This short article’s main premise is to dispel the notion that Ethiopian Muslim youth are out of touch with reality; thus prone to provoke frictions in an otherwise very peaceful coexistence between Christians and Muslims in Ethiopia. Of course this blame is hurtled at the Ethiopian Muslim youth who are portrayed as being unruly simply because they have become more vocal of their rights than their predecessors. While I am not surprised by the accusations emanating from non-Muslims, it is unfortunate to hear that some Muslims with good intention may be expressing the same sentiment toward our youth.
